약 1300년전인 서기632(신라 제22대 선덕여왕원년) 은점선사가 속칭 무시밭골에 초창하여 정수사라 하였는데, 1259년(고려 제20대 원종 원년) 폭풍우로 넘어진 것을 1261년 중건하고 천택사라 개칭하였다. 그후 조선 제16대 인조때 대화재를 입어 폐허의 지경에 이른것을 동왕6년(1628년)에 천택사 잔해를 현 위치에 이전하여 용화사라 부르게 되었다. 경내에는 보광전, 탐진당, 명부전, 칠성전, 종각등의 건물이 있으며, 보광전은 별도로 지방유형문화재 제249호로 지정되었다.
