신라소지왕 6녀(484) 각연대사가 창건한 옛 장수사와 4대 부속 암자중에서 현존하는 유일한 사찰로 6.25동란때 소실되어 1953년 안의면 당본리에 있는 봉황대에 별원을 차려 놓았다가 옛터의 복원을 추진하여 1959년 재건하였다.
