신라 문무왕10년(670)의상대사가 창건하여 옥천사라 하였으며 고려 원종8년(1267)보각국사(일연)가 중창하여 불일사로 개칭 다시 용천사로 고쳤으며 지금가람은 1805년(순조5년)의열화주가 크게 중수하여 오늘에 이르고있다.
