옛날 이 절터의 동구에 용추가 있어 등천했다 하여 붙인 용연사는 신라 신덕왕때 보양국사가 창건하였으며 세종1년(1419)에 해운당 천일대사가 중건하였음. 그 후 임란때 완전히 소실하게 되어 청하당인잠, 탄옥, 경천등에 명하여 재건한 바 있으나 다시 효종 1년에 종각만 남기고 소실되었음. 그 후 노숙이, 홍묵, 계홍등 24인과 함께 10년이 걸려 재건하고 지금의 건물은 영조 4년(1728)에 세워진 것이다.
