- 552년 신라24대 진흥왕 13년경 의신조사가 천축(지금의 인도)에 가서 불도를 닦고 고국에 돌아와 이곳에다 용암사를 창건하였으며, 그 다음헤 진흥왕14년에 법주사를 창건하였다. 용암사라는 불리어온 유래는 용암사라 명명 했는데 용바위는 애석하게도 일본인들의 손에 파괴되고 현재는 넓은 바위만 남아있다. 경내에는 대웅전과 마애미륵불 그리고 두개의 삼층석탑이 전래되고 있다.
