용암사는 장지산에 위치한다. 이곳에 가람이 형성된 연대는 알 수 없고 다만 보물 제93호로 지정된 용미리석불입상이 11세기 말의 것으로 추정되고 있어 이 시기부터 사찰이 있었으리라 여겨지나 그에 관한 기록이나 유구 및 유물은 남아있지 않다. 가람의 오른쪽으로 대웅전이 비교적 넓은 터에 남향해 있었으나, `97년도 방화로 추정되는 화재가 발생하여 현재는 재건되고 있다. 석불이 있는 기슭으로 미륵전이 있으며 대웅전 앞에는 봉덕사종을 본딴 범종(높이 187m, 종구 115㎝)을 안치한 범종각이 위치해 있다.
