통일신라시대 영원조사가 창건한 이래 서산, 청매, 사명, 포광스님 등 당대의 선지식들이 주석한바 있는 수도도량으로 영원사에 보존된 조실안록의 기록에 의하면 소실전에 100칸이 넘는 9채의 건물로 웅장한 가람의 모습을 지녔다고 한다. 서산대사의 법사인 부용영관스님을 비롯한 조실스님이 109명이나 있었으며, 청매스님의 방광사리탑과 각운선사의 염송설화가 얽힌 필단사리탑 1기가 말사인 상무주암에 있다. 사찰입구의 부도군에는 서상면에 소재한 영각사를 창건하고 화엄경팜을 각한 설파상언 대사의 부도가 있어 대사의 불제자가 센운 것으로 보인다. 현재의 건물은 여순반란사건과 6.25 전란으로 완전소실후 새로 부분 복원되었다.
