고려태조 원년에 왕자 증통국사가 창건하였고 1624년 벽암대사가 중건하였다. 조선 순조 30년(1831) 지방민의 후원으로 규승 묘익이 중수하고, 고종 5년에 이한이 또다시 고쳤다. 1980년 헤철스님이 대웅전, 극락전, 선방을 새로이 지어 오늘에 이르고 있다.
