신라 헌강와 2년(878) 송광대사가 창건한 사찰로 여러차례 소실 되었다가 강용월 대사가 중수한후 6.25동란때 법당과 하엄경판(설파 상언스님 각)이 소실 되었는데 1959년 해운스님이 법당을 신축하여 오늘에 이르고 있다.
