합천읍 남쪽 황강 강변 절벽 밑에 있는데 신라 선덕여왕 11년 (713)에 창건하였고 중수는 이조 영조 31년(1755)에 인조대사가 시공한 것이다. 오랜역사를 가진 이절에 대한 유적기가 없으나 현재 이절은 서기 1939년에 동호대사가 중건하였으며 ,현재 법당은 1981년에 성호스님에 의해 해체 신축하여 현재에 이르고 있음.
