감악산의 북쪽 중턱에 있는 절로서 신라 애장왕 3년(802)에 감악조사가 감악산 북쪽에 세웠으나 빈대 때문에 절을 없애고 지금 자리로 옮겼다고 한다. 고려 공민왕16년(1367)벽암선사가 10여 사원을 지어 불도를 가르쳤고, 아랫쪽에 있는 부도 역시 그때세웠다 하며 1932년 해인사로 부터 황선진 대사가 와서 지금 건물인 대웅전을 중수하고 칠성각을 지었고 박탄성 박화상 두사람이 금조종사를 데리고 와서 선원과 강학할 수있는 집을 지었다.
