조선 숙종 20년에 여적대사가 창건하였으며 고종 9년(1905) 남응익대사가 중창하였고 순종 3년에 삼성각을 창건함. 그후 한국동란 당시 전소되고 초암을 지어 수도하던 보안스님이 1964년에 중건하여 오늘에 이르고 있음.
