약사암은 원래 인왕사라 하였고 증심사의 창건을 위해 세웠다고 전해지고 있는데 현재 약사암에 보존되어 있는 유물로서 석조여래좌상(보물 600호)과 삼층석탑이 모두 9세기 전반의 작품으로 추정되고있어 이러한 약사암의 창건대를 뒷받침해 주고 있음. 무등산에서는 유일하게 6.25의 전화를 입지 않은 사찰이기도 함.
