신라 문무왕 2년(서기 569년)화엄종조인 원효대사가 창건하였고 임진왜란으로 전소된 것을 묘전화상이 복원하여 6.25사변으로 사찰이 황폐화 되어 1965년 문헌과 고증을 찾아 옛모습에 가깝게 복원하였음
