- 656년(신라 태종무열왕 3)에 창건. - 1430년(세종 12)에 천태종 판사도대선사(判事都大禪師) 행호(行乎)가 중건. - 1598년(선조 31) 8월 29일 왜군 500여명이 지리산으로 들어와서 금대(金臺)와 더불어 이 절을 불태웠고, 그 뒤 다시 중건하였으나 6·25 때 완전히 소진된 것을 1963년에 금련대(金蓮臺)만을 박씨(朴氏)부인이 중창.
