서기 722년 의상대사의 제자인 삼법스님이 중국에서 선종 6대조인 혜능의 정상을 모시고와 현재의 금당 자리에 난야를 짓고 8년동안 선을 닦은 곳으로 840년 진감선사 혜소가 중창하여 옥천사라 하였으며, 그후 정강왕 때 쌍계사라 개명되어 오늘에 이르고 있다.
