신라 929년(경순왕 3년)에 창건되었다고 전하는데 6.25동란으로 소실되었으며, 그 후 950년경에 동봉화상이 삼봉산 동룡동으로 옮겼으나 16나한을 봉안할 별전이 없어 나한전을 976년 새로 건립하여 모두 21구의 작고 다양한 부처를 안치하였다.
