조선조 중엽부터 있었던 사찰이라고 전해지고 있으나 정확한 기록은 없으며 1918년경 학승스님이 복원하였음. 현재 일암 주지스님은 전북지방에서 으뜸가는 범패기능 보유자로 영상작법집을 발간하기도 하였음.
