서해바다가 내려다보이는 사적 217호로 지정된 구봉산 당성을 배경으로 자리잡고 있는 본 신흥사는 1934년 덕인 스님이 한영석 거사의 시주로 창건하였습니다. 당성은 고구려 영유왕때 덕과 예술과 문학을 겸비한 선비를 보내 달라는 고구려의 요구에 의하여 당나라에서 팔학사를 보내어 그중 홍학사가 이곳에 머물면서 중국 문물을 받아들인 곳이며, 군사 요충지로도 매우 중요한 역할을 한 곳입니다
