신라 민애왕 원년(838년) 범일국사가 지흥사라 하여 북평읍 지흥리에서 창건한 것인데 현종 15면(1674년)현 위치로 이전하여 광운사라 하였고, 다시 운흥사로 고쳐 불렀다는데, 영조 46년 화재를 당하고, 영조 47년 영담노사가 중건했고, 순조 21년 부사 이헌규가 많은 재원을 지원해 주고, 신흥사라 개명하였고, 그후 철종 14년 (1863) 7월에 중사하였음.
