백제 의자왕 11년(서기651년) 고구려 보덕화상이 창건 940년(고려태조23년) 도선국사가 중창 조선 1393년(태조2년) 무학선사 중창, 1876년(고종 13년) 보연화상 중창 고종 22년 관찰사 심상훈이 중수하면서 어순한 나라가 일신 발전하여 신기원이 이루어지기를 염원하여 神院寺를 新元寺로 고침 神院寺가 말해주듯 기도하는 터를 의미하는 것이며 중악단(中嶽壇)은 계룡산의 주신을 모신 곳이란 뜻임 국제선원은 1988년 개원 이래 한국불교의 국제화를 촉진하는 곳임
