수도사는 신라 원효대사의 5대 성지 가운데 하나로 전해지기도 하며, 신라 원성왕 14년(798)에 염거화상이 창건하였다는 설이 있으나 확실하지 않으며, 임진왜란 때 불에 타서 그후에 건립하였다고 한다. 다만 절 주위에 흩어져 있는 석탑 부재와 뒤편의 거목 느티나무로 보아 고찰이었을 것으로 추측이 된다
