신라 내물왕때 창건되어 임진왜란때 소실되어 대웅전, 명부전이 큰 피해를 입었으나 후에 중건하였음. 대웅전 현판글씨는 숙종대왕 친필임. 목불 3점은 채색이 화려함. 경내에 보물 제189호인 송림사 5층전탑이 있음.
