신라 진흥왕때 창건하였으며, 조선조 중기에 소요대사를 비롯한 저명한 승려들이 배출되었고 고려의 강감찬 장군도 이 절의 출신이라는 일화가 있다. 대웅전은 정면3칸, 측면3칸의 팔작지붕이다
