- 신라 흥덕와10년(835)무렴국사가 왜적의 침입을 막기 위해 창건 - 진경대사의 중건을 거쳐 임진왜란때 소실되어 숙종7년(1681)재건하고 순조17년(1817)부속건물 세움 - 대웅전 삼존불의 복장물(조성지)에 1655년 삼존불을 신조하였으며, 당시 "웅신사"(속칭 곰절)이라 칭함
