선찰사는 신라시대 창건된 것으로만 전해지고 그 후의 연혁은 전하지 않고있다. 안동의 향토지인 영가지에 따르면 선찰사는 임하현 남쪽 17리쯤 떨어진 약산 동쪽의 물이 휘돌아 가는 곳에 있다. 왼쪽으로는 절벽이 싸고 있고 앞에는 독산이 마주하였다고 적고 있다.
