백제 위덕왕24년(577) 의운국사가 창건하고 조선성종3년(1472) 행조선사가 중거하였으나 정유재란때 병화로 소실된것을 광해군5년(1613)에 원준대사가 재건하였으며 대웅전은 보물 제290호로 지정된 건물이다. 창건 당시는 요사 189개와 89암자 굴 144개와 3,000여명의 승려가 수도한 호남제일의 사찰이었다고 전해오고 있다. 현재 본당은 대웅전외 11개의 중요건물과 동운암,석상암,참당암,도솔암의 4개 암자를 보유하고 있는 대한불교 조계종 제24교구 본사이다.
