신라시대에 유명한 의상대사가 692년에 전국에 10개의 사찰을 지을때 건립된 사찰로서 그때는 지금의 자리가 아닌 서쪽편에 자리를 잡았다. 대웅전은 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸의 맛배지붕 다포집으로 구성되어 있으며, 고려말엽 나옹대사가 1361년에 신광사의 주지가 되어 절을 지금의 자리로 옮겼다. 나옹대사가 새로 절터를 잡고 터를 닦는데 큰 바위가 나왔다하여 터닦을 禪자를 넣어 절 이름을 선석사라 고쳤다. 현재도 대웅전 앞뜰에 묻힌채 그 머리부분만 땅 위로 내밀고 있다.
