고려시대 천태종의 시조로 불리어진 대각국사 의천께서 세운 사찰로 임진왜란때 소실되었다고 전해지고 있으며 1922년 유장열이 이곳 땅속에 묻혀있는 대각국사비를 발견하여 현재의 위치에 세우고 1966년 유재선이 사찰과 비각을 건립하였다. 경내에 보물 제251호인 선봉사대각국사비가 있다.
