신라때 의상대사가 창건하였다고 전하며 임진왜란때 병화로 소실되었는데 영조때(1750년경) 모은 방잉걸이 다시 지었다. 동학농민혁명과 한국동란때 소실되었는데 1973년 조병일이 모친의 뜻을 받아 중건하였다.
