서기 1357년(고려 공민왕6년)에 당시 왕사였던 나옹 혜근 대화상이 창건했다고 전해주며 이 후 1443년(조선 세종 25년)에 무학대사의 제자인 설암 관익대사가 중수하고 석굴에 지장보살과 나한 두 존상을 조성했다.
