신라 진성여왕(887~896)대에 고운(孤雲) 최치원이 개기한 것으로 전해오고 있는 사찰로서 정확한 창간년대는 알 수 없음. 선조 25년(1592년)임진왜란으로 대부분 전소되었으나 대웅전만 칡뿌리등이 감싸여 있어 화를 면하였다고하여 당시에는 葛天寺라 불리었음. 이후 대웅전은 고종7년 의철(義澈), 진일(鎭一), 정기(正基)스님등이 중수하였음.
