신라 진성여왕 대에 최치원이 개기한 것으로 전해오고 있는 사찰임 선조 25년 임진왜란으로 대부분 전소되었으나 대웅전만 칡뿌리등이 감싸여 있어 화를 면하였다고 하여 당시에는 천사라 불리었음 이후 대웅전은 고종 7년 의숙,진일, 정기스님등이 중수하였음
