서고사는 후백제 견훤이 전주에 도읍을 정하고 국운의 회복과 백성의 안녕을 기원하기 위해 왕즉위 즉시(908) 명덕화상에 의하여 창건되었다고 전함. 또한 전주 4고사찰중 하나로 서쪽에 위치하였기 때문에 서고사라 칭하였으며 본사찰이 황방산에 위치하고 있어 황방이란 서쪽 허한부분에서 삽쌀개가 밤새 지저대어 누른다는 뜻에서 연유한 것이라 함.
