신라 성덕왕 19년에 창건되었으며 1391년(고려 공민왕 3년)이 태조가 즉위하기전에 이곳에 백일기도를 드렸다는 이야기가 전해오며 세조대왕이 이곳에서 7일간 기업제를 하고 선조 태조의 유적을 추모하는 즐거움에 비할데 없다며 이 암자를 상환암이라 칭했다는 구전.
