신라 성덕왕 19년에 창건되었으며 조선 고종 13년(1876)에 인명대사가 중건. 1897년 진붕대사가 중건. 일설에는 법주사를 초창할 때 제반자재를 보관하였던 창고인데 역사를 마친후 상고암이라 부르게 됨. 원래는 상고, 중고, 하고가 있었는데 중고, 하고는 70여년전 폐사되었다고 함.
