창건연대는 문헌상 정확한 기록이 없으나 100여년전부터 현위치에 자리한 사찰이라 함. 박흥석스님이 50년 전에 중건하여 인법당만 있는 불정사를 칠성사라 개명하였으며 1963년 지금의 불정사 조실 일봉 임영택스님이 인수하여 법당과 요사를 건립하고 절의 면모를 갖추고 칠성사를 다시 옛이름인 불정사로 고쳐 부르게 되었음.
