북장사는 상주시 내서면 북장리 38번지 천주산에 있다. 조계종 사찰로 신라시대에 창건한 것으로 추정하며 1628년(인조6)중창하였다. 이 절에는 파랑새가 그렸다는 전설이 있는 괘불(보물 1278호)이 있으며 이 괘불의 크기는 높이 1,337cm, 폭 807cm이며 제작년대는 1688년(숙종 14)이며 마본채색으로 되어있다 또한 인평동 폐탑을 옮겨 원형대로 복원한 북장사 삼층석탑(문화재자료 238호)가 있다
