부인사는 선덕여왕 27년인 7세기경 창건하였다는 사전이 있고 또 선덕여왕의 묘가 있으며 그안에 선덕여왕의 영정을 모시고 해마다 음력3월 보름에 동민과 신도들이 사찰에서 선덕제를 지내는 것을 볼 때 부인이란 선덕여왕을 지칭하는 듯하며, 신라시대에는 왕비를 인이라 칭했기 때문에 선덕여왕의 원당이었던 듯하다.
