신라 성덕왕 19년에 창건. 조선 인조 2년(1624)에 벽암대사가 중창. 조선 세조 10(1464)년에 행차하시어 이 복천암의 고승인 신미대사와 학조대사등을 인견하고 3일간 기예하였으며 일면에 용형이 조각되고 사우에는 만년보역이라 쓴 사각 왕판을 하사하였으며 대암석이 있어 그 속에서 청명한 청수가 흘러나오고 있어 복천암이라 칭하였음.
