1914년 강정리마을 주민들에 의해 광덕암이란 이름으로 세워졌으며, 마령쪽에서 보면 광대봉이 북쪽에 있으므로 북수사(北峀寺)라고도 불렀는데 1948년 중수 도중 보흥사 상량문이 발견되어 보흥사라 개칭하였다.
