보현사는 신라 진덕여왕 4년 자장율사가 창건한 사찰로 후에 낭원대사에 의해 중창되고 지장선원으로 개칭되었다. 지금의 건물은 조선후기에 세운 건물로 3단의 장대석 기단을 설치하고 규모 정면 3칸, 측면 3칸의 팔작지붕이다. 보현사는 전설에 의하면 문수, 보현 두보살이 석주를 타고 건너와 강릉의 한송사와 보현사를 창건하엿다는 전설에 근거하여 보현사라 칭했다 한다. 보현가 대웅전을 비롯한 건물은 조선초기의 건축양식으로 믿어지며, 영동지역 사찰로는 가장 오래되고 규모도 크다. 2005년 지장선원 신축을 위한 발굴조사가 실시되었으며, 금동제 풍탁을 비롯한 자기류 등이 확인되었다.
