1875년 두타산 칠부능선에 암자를 창건 계승하다가 1968년 김영옥스님이 계승하고 1976년 취약성 독립가옥으로 철거된 후 800미터 쯤 내려와서 현재의 위치에 사찰을 창건하고 불법승 삼보의 보자와 두타산의 타자를 따서 보타살 명명 현재에 이르고 있음.
