낙가산 기슭에 현존하는 고찰로 사전에 의하면 신라 진흥왕(567)에 창건, 숙종9년(1683)에 세운 보살사 중수비에 의하면 이 사찰은 고려 공민왕 때에 이미 있었고 세조(1458) 어명으로 연기인 벽암의 고제 경특에 의거 관리 임진왜란후(1683)에 대폭 중수하여 오다가 고종9년(1872) 2월26일 일륜대사가 중수하여 오늘에 이름.
