보문사는 신라 문무왕(文武王) 16년(676)에 의상대사(義湘大師)가 처음 건립한 고찰로 1300년 역사의 가람이다. 개창된 뒤 여러 차례의 재난으로 도괴된 것을 고려 명종(明宗) 14년(1184) 보조국사(普照國師) 지눌(知訥)이 머무르면서 극락전을 비롯하여 염불당, 나한전, 반학루, 원당, 운계암, 조실 등 7동의 건물을 복원하였는데 임진왜란 때 모두 불타고 극락전과 반학루 및 삼층석탑이 남아 있었다. 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸의 극락전은 조선 중·후기 건축양식이 절충되어 나타나는 변화를 보이고 있다. 1700년 후반의 건축으로 주심포계(柱心包系)와 익공계(翼工系) 양식이 절충되어 나타난다.
