조선 정조 12년(1788년) 금강산에서 수도한 원담스님이 창건하여 신원사라 하였다. 6.25전쟁으로 많은 건물이 소실되었고, 일부 건물이 보존되어 1980년 11월 보광사로 개명되었다.
