봉학사라는 사찰이 폐쇄된 후 봉학사지 남쪽에 보광산의 산이름을 따서 보광사를 건립함. 1925년 봉학사 폐사지에 권봉주 스님이 암자를 건립. 1936년 김봉삼 스님이 석불을 봉안하고 사찰을 건축함.
