서역승 지공화상이 탐승구법차 여러곳을 주유하다 이곳을 보고 기암괴석이 금강과 같다하여 영축이라 이름하고 가탑을 세운 것이 법화암임 . 등록에 신라고찰 보림사를 창건, 9개 암자를 두었다 하나 지금은 터만 남아 있고 법화암 하나만 현존하고 있으며, 약 3백년전 지옥사가 당시 암반상에 전당을 중창하였으나 세월이 흘러 전당이 퇴약하여 45년전 중수한 것을 1987년 11월에 재중수함
