신라말 어느 임금이 왕자가 없음을 근심하여 고산사를 창건하여 기도도량으로 기도후 두 왕자를 탄생한 기념으로 3층 석탑을 건립. 임진왜란으로 고산사는 불타버리고 석탑만 남아있음. 1961년경 폐허가 된 절터위에 불자들에 의해 석탑을 재건하고 범당과 승방을 건립하여 법장사로 개칭
