원래 19세기말 창건되었다고 하며, 현재의 위치보다 31킬로미터 올라간지점에 있었으나 고종 31년(1894)산불로 소실되어 현재의 자리로 옮겨 새로지었다.대표적인 스님으로는 경흔,금오스님이 계시고, 1097년 정화스님이 주석하면서 법당을 확장하고 요사를 증축하여 오늘에 이르고 있다.
